The Lockland Child
March 2009: St Magnus the Martyr, Central London
The audience were asked to decide the fate of an orphan who would inherit the island of Lockland. The child’s custody was being contested by the nearby and competing islands of Amas and Oden, both of whom had clearly distinctive ideologies.
As part of the research and development for The Valley we undertook an investigation into non verbal communication between audiences through a language system they had no prior experience of before the event.
We saw how they adapted to the rules of the language, adapted them to their needs and the silent, yet fevered debate that took place before the child’s future was decided.
